ovulata. Styli filiformi-subulati. Carpella indehiscentia. Sew>n
erectum, subglobosum,- basi arillatura, testa Crustacea.—Frutices scan-
denies, ramis riyidis flemom, foliis coriaceis conspicue penninerviis, spiel's
axillanbus vel terminalibits paniculatis, floribus sessilibus secundis librae-
teolatis.
An oBscure and imperfectly described genus of Vahl's, identified and characterized
by Arnott in 1834. It appears to have more affinity with the Australian forms of
the Order than any other tropical genus has. The species are all natives of Ceylon,
and require study in their native country to determine the amount of variation, to
which they are subject.

Rami pilis adpressis scabri. Folia crassa, coriacea, 4-6 poll, longa, 3-4 lata, su-
peroe glabra, subtus pubescentia.

Hami juniores incam. Folia oblonga, .forma admodum varia, breviter petiolata,
4-6 poll, longa, 2^-3^ lata; inferiora multo majora, interdum fere pedalia, crassa,
superne glabra, subtus ad nervos puberula. Panicula interdum foliosa. Flares mag-
nitudine varii.

This genus was founded by Rottboll in 1783, on a Geylon plant.   Decandollfl,
in the Systema, united with this the Lenidia of Poirefc, founded on a Madagascar •
plant, and added the Mllenia, dentata of Thmiberg as a third species, but with well-
founded doubts as to the propriety of distinguishing it from RottbfflTs plant.   The
